“30 years of creation”
Τhessaly Science Festival 2018
Pappas Mill, Larissa
#thsf2018: 5.000 visitors celebrated the 30th anniversary of the University of Thessaly
40 research, academic, educational organizations | 80 different interactive events | 22 workshops for children | 6 workshops for
adults | 15 speeches | musical events | Celebrity Science | StandUp Science | Various actions for every age!
For the first time was organized with great success the one and only Science and Innovation Festival in Thessaly, Thessaly Science Festival, from 11 to 13 October, at Pappas Mill, capturing the interest of 5,000 visitors. Of these, 1.800 were school students who became acquainted with science through interesting activities. For 3 days, the cultural shelter in the centre of Larissa, Pappas Mill, hosted 40 research, academic and educational organizations with a total of 80 different interactive events. Among them, 22 workshops for children, 6 workshops, 15 speeches, as well as a number of other activities for all ages!
With the slogan of “30 years of creation”, researchers, scientific teams, non-governmental organizations and scientific associations demonstrated us the magical world of science and technology, presenting impressive applications, experiments and innovative discoveries. Among them, very talented and renowned speakers impressed the large audience. Some of them were: Konstantinos Gourgoulianis, Theofani Boboti, Kleomeni Tsigani, Dimitris Kouretas, Athanasios Korakis, Katerina Moutou, Georgios Stampoulis, Dimitris Papastergiou, George Spyrogiannopoulos and Christos Chatzichristodoulou. These people showed us how science can change the way we are living.
It is worth mentioning the great participation of the University of Thessaly with its researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, who gave their best to all the activities of the Festival. They managed among with other scientific associations to design and liven up every interactive exhibition with exciting activities for all ages.
Our little friends with passion solved the mystery of Dr. Panzurlix, filling the courtyard with joy, and they made their own wonderful jewelry… from Biology together with the doctoral students of the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology!
In the courtyard of the “Pappas Mill”, the Centaurus Racing Team of the University of Thessaly invited the visitors to explore the secrets of speed in the racing model of Formula 1, and the team of Paratiro.gr showed us how we can protect wildlife through an innovative mobile app. In the mornings, the Social Cooperative Enterprise Enastron led us to an adventure, in which we observed the sun with telescopes, and with the contribution of the Astronomical Observatory of Larissa (A-POLARIS) the Festival ended with the observation of the sky under the stars.
Some of our “special” visitors had the opportunity to become “CSI agents” in the workshop that had been organized by the students of the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology, while the team of the Department of Agriculture demonstrated us alive insects and how they can be used as a potential protein source! At the same time, the research teams from the TEI of Thessaly showed us the amazing capabilities of our mobile phones, the team of EKETA allowed us to test our power in the “reactionary ground”, as well as the team of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering not only presented smart devices but also created a photo shoot from the Festival and an open questionnaire to the public so as to evaluate their actions! The visitors were also extremely impressed by the… aquarium eggplants of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Environment, who introduced us to a new way of cultivation based on innovative solutions. And of course, everyone played…football with the robotic constructions of the S.T.E.M Robotics Academy. There were also experiments of Biology and Cybersecurity from the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics.*
The presentations of Celebrity Science were also a great success: In an Amphitheater, the astrophysicist Kleomenis Tsiganis, who came from Larissa, and the famous actor Renos Charalambidis led us on a journey to…the stars and the celestial conflicts, in a night full of humor, while Dimitris Kouretas of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and chef Elias Mamalakis gave us…the secrets of cooking along with answers to hot questions concerning the best ways to eat healthy.
The Science Reactors, once again, proved to us how fun and cool can be the demonstration of scientific topics by people who are passionate advocates of science and how understandable might they be to the crowd.
Music and dance could not be missing from the Festival. The artistic events accompanied with joy and optimism the great celebration of science. Specifically the participation of the Music and Cinema Ensemble of the Music School of Larissa in the opening ceremony, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Larissa, the…scientific choreography of the Medical and Biochemistry Group of Larissa, the dance of the volunteers of the Festival of Science of Thessaly and the … General Percussion Team of the Musical School of Larissa fired up every sense.
In the end, we would like to offer thanks to the sponsors of the event, whose contribution was decisive for the success of the Festival. Specifically, we would like to thank the companies POLYTECH SA, Armos Publications, Innovatia Systems, ANTISEL, Lab Supplies Scientific, Lab Solutions and the SOKOLA patisserie. In addition, we have great regard to the collaborators of the Festival who covered other operational needs of the event such as the University Publications of Thessaly and the Kaltsas Bookstore for printing, the Tyrnavos Winery for the gift to our guest-speakers, the Las Ramblas cafe for the wonderful treats to the visitors and the Hotel Metropol of Larissa for hosting our guests.
Through interactive educational workshops for children, adult seminars, speeches and a variety of original activities, we believe that the most important goal was achieved: the audience approached science, learning became fun and it turned out that science concerns all of us. We are renewing our appointment for 2019!
